This is a list of characters and a brief explanation about each one. Holden has a different relationship type with each character depending on who the character is and the tide of the relationship changes overtime. He also has a hard time getting along with so many people he meets and knows closely as well, it becomes a problem for Holden himself and the person he's talking to. His relationship towards some people are much better than others, for instance; Phoebe. Holden also has a hard time with others, with some he likes such as Jane Gallagher; Holden always tries to get contact of her but then changes his mind. As the plot progresses, the characters change as well in many different ways.

Holden Caulfield - The protagonist and narrator of the novel. He's a sixteen year-old junior who has just been expelled for academic failure from a school called Pencey Prep. Although he displays a number of typical teenage characteristics, his adolescent foibles become increasingly disturbing throughout the novel, revealing a self-destructive side. As the novel opens, Holden stands poised on the cliff separating childhood from adulthood. His inability to successfully negotiate the chasm leaves him on the verge of emotional collapse. Pheobe Caulfield -Holden's younger sister. She is ten years old and is very smart, she also disagrees with Holdens view on life. Holden thinks very high of his younger sister and cares very much about her. Pheobe Information

D.B. - Holden's older brother. He is a smart and succesfull screenwriter. He lives in Hollywood and although Holden somewhat idolizes him, he feels like his brother is prostituting his talent for money. D.B. Information

Allie Caulfield - Allie is Holden's younger brother. Sadly, Allie died of Leukemia. He may not be alive, but he's alive in Holden's heart, and we hear about him a lot in the book. Allie Information

Jane Gallagher- A girl with whom Holden spent a lot of time one summer, when their families stayed in neighboring summer houses in Maine. Jane never actually appears in The Catcher in the Rye, but she is extremely important to Holden, because she is one of the few girls whom he both respects and finds attractive. Jane Information

Mr. and Mrs. Caulfield -Holden’s parents who are unable to provide him with the parental understanding that he needs. Mr. Caulfield is a corporation lawyer, and Mrs. Caulfield is a housewife. Very little is revealed about these two characters, and only Mrs. Caulfield is ever seen, and then only briefly. Found here

Stradlater - Holden’s roommate at Pencey Prep. Stradlater is handsome, self-satisfied, and popular, but Holden calls him a “secret slob,” because he appears well groomed, but his toiletries, such as his razor, are disgustingly unclean. Stradlater Info

Ackley - Holden’s next-door neighbor in his dorm at Pencey Prep. Ackley is a pimply, insecure boy with terrible dental hygiene. He often barges into Holden’s room and acts completely oblivious to Holden’s hints that he should leave. Holden believes that Ackley makes up elaborate lies about his sexual experience. Ackley Info

Mr. Antolini - Mr. Antolini was Holden's favorite teacher at Elkton Hills. Holden views Mr. Antolini as a big brother in a way. He is young, clever, sympathetic, and likable. Holden sometimes finds him a bit too clever, but he looks to him for guidance. Mr. Antolini Info
Mrs. Lilian Simmons - Was D.B.'s old girlfriend that Holden meets at Ernies but he leaves quickly to avoid talking to her and her new boyfriend.

Maurice -The elevator man at the Edmont Hotel, who offers Holden a prostitute. As Holden rejects and pays the prostitute short fo money, Maurice aggresively demands the money and acts hostile about it. Holden doesn't go along with him and insults Maurice so therefore, punches him in the stomach. Maurice Information
Sunny -A prostitute whom Holden hires for the evening but then rejects. Sunny demands a ten-dollar payment, but Holden had been led to believe that the charge would only be five. Sunny Information
