From Holden's Hat, A Catcher in the Rye encyclopedia anyone can roam around in the rye...

Holden has serious issues and psychological problems in the novel The Catcher in the Rye. Holden has so many negative feelings that it is severely impacting not just himself, but the people around him in many different ways. During Holden's madman days, he has several mental sicknesses, as well as external and internal conflicts with many characters in the book that have been ruling his life even before the beginning of the novel. As Holden continues his clueless journey, he suffers from many problems that accumulate and compound, causing him to become mentally unstable. Since Holden is mentally unset from the rest of teenagers his age, he may have some mental abnormality which is different from the normal teenage angst & conflict. Although many teenagers suffer mental sickness and stress, Holden goes though much worse and can't face the adult world. In addition, he can't handle the stress that comes to him and participates in abnormal acts for a person his age such as drinking, heavy smoking and getting a prostitute (Although it wasn't unusual for teens to have sex, it was usually done with their date). Holden's mind is definitely unset and absolutely immature in his thoughts, actions and opinions, which could possibly be the reason he ends up in an asylum at the end of his story.
